Allergist Maliena Longley, MD, on Removing Geographic Barriers to Care

Maliena Longley, MD, is a board-certified allergist practicing in Tampa, Florida. We asked her to answer a few questions about her specialty and working with Sitka.

What inspired you to become an allergist and immunologist?

I became interested in the field initially because I had such severe environmental allergies as a child. After starting on allergy immunotherapy as a young teen, I became so intrigued by the fact that the body can overcome allergies using a process that has been around for over 100 years! I viewed it as a unique specialty in medicine because it deals so heavily with improving daily quality of life and didn’t revolve around “medication” only. In fact, there is much advice to give an allergic patient besides medication these days!

What do you enjoy most about working with Sitka?

I love seeing so much innovation occur in medicine. This platform removes geographic barriers and allows me to provide services to patients who may otherwise not be able to receive care in my specialty. I’ve had wonderful interactions that truly make me feel like I’m really making a difference in someone’s life.

What are your favorite activities outside of work?

I love the beach! Living in Florida has its perks and that is definitely one of them! I also love ballroom dancing, running, and playing with my girls who are 8 and 10.
